GH¢25m Insufficient to Settle WAEC’s Debt, Council Warns
Funds fall short of clearing outstanding debt, delaying WASSCE results release
- WAEC officials have warned that the funds are not enough
- The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has caused considerable anxiety among students
- WAEC has called for more substantial support to address its financial difficulties
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed frustration with the GH¢25 million allocated by the government to settle part of its GH¢118 million debt, describing it as woefully inadequate.
WAEC officials have warned that the funds are not enough to enable the release of the delayed 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, which are still pending due to the Council’s financial challenges.
In an interview, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, emphasized that the GH¢25 million is far below the amount needed to address the Council’s operational needs.
“That GH¢25 million is just a drop in the ocean compared to the funds required to carry out our duties,” Kapi stated. He explained that part of the money is needed to pay GH¢25 million owed to technicians who must be compensated before they can begin work on the machines necessary for the exam process.
“Even if we decide to bring in the technicians now, the first thing they will demand is the outstanding payment, meaning that the GH¢25 million would be entirely spent on that,” he added.
The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has caused considerable anxiety among students, parents, and educational institutions, all of whom are waiting for the results to proceed with their academic and career plans.
WAEC has called for more substantial support to address its financial difficulties and ensure the timely completion of its tasks.
