Galamsey Fight Is Far From Over – Dr. Ashigbey Calls for Renewed Collective Action
Media Coalition Pushes for Collective Action as Government’s Measures Against Galamsey Remain Unclear
- Dr. Ashigbey insists the fight against galamsey is far from over
- He emphasizes that if the battle is lost, everyone is to blame
- The Media Coalition plans to write to the government and presidential candidates
The Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has dismissed report by the Inquisita Newspaper that the battle against illegal mining has faltered.
He emphasized that some media outlets are still actively involved in the fight, despite some reports suggesting otherwise.
Speaking on the Lawson TV/Radio Ghana ‘Se Se Sen’ Morning Show, Dr. Ashigbey attributed the perception of a dying effort to a lack of public updates on government actions, including the special courts dedicated to tackling galamsey.
He called on Organized Labour and Civil Society Organizations to renew their commitment to the cause, stressing that combating galamsey is a collective effort.
“If we fail, everyone must bear the responsibility,” Dr. Ashigbey warned. “We are being poisoned and dying slowly. It’s a serious threat to us all, and we must act now.”
He further cautioned against politicizing the issue, pointing out that the dangers of galamsey affect everyone, regardless of status.
Dr. Ashigbey also revealed that the Media Coalition Against Galamsey will soon send a letter to the government to inquire about the progress of anti-galamsey measures and will urge presidential candidates to commit to the fight by signing a pact if elected.
