Akufo-Addo Greenlights Upgrades for Districts and Municipalities Across Ghana
New classifications to enhance local governance and development under Ghana’s Local Government Act

- Selected districts will be upgraded to municipalities
- Reclassification aligns with Act 936
- Proposals for additional district creations are under active review to address growing administrative needs
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the elevation of selected districts to municipalities and certain municipalities to metropolises.
This move, prompted by a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), complies with Ghana’s Local Government Act (Act 936).
With this decision, specific district and municipal assemblies will be reclassified, pending completion of legal and administrative steps.
The elevation of Ho Municipal to a Metropolis, as well as proposed upgrades for Offinso North and Birim North Districts, remain under consideration.
Additionally, requests to establish new districts are being thoroughly reviewed for possible action.
