Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has underscored the urgent need to fortify Parliament to enhance its oversight capabilities.
During the inauguration of the Parliament Supplementary Office Complex on October 29, he stressed Parliament’s vital role in upholding democracy and ensuring governmental accountability.
Bagbin pointed out that the core activities of Parliament aim to honor the will of the Ghanaian populace, highlighting the necessity of collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to strengthen its functions.
He emphasized that boosting Parliament’s capacity would enable more effective monitoring of government actions, fostering greater transparency and trust between the government and its citizens.
He called on lawmakers to prioritize their oversight duties and collaborate on pressing national challenges such as governance, public health, and economic issues.
Bagbin recognized the significance of adequate infrastructure in enhancing Parliament’s operations, expressing appreciation for the new office complex, which he views as a major advancement that will better equip Members of Parliament to perform their roles.
“Beyond making laws, Parliament is the sole entity responsible for oversight, ensuring that our combined efforts—be it in resources, energy, or trust—are utilized for the collective benefit of all. Strengthening Parliament isn’t just Parliament’s responsibility; it’s a shared obligation. We must unite to ensure our constituents do not suffer or struggle in vain for their voices to be heard,” he declared.
