Trump: World Cup Could End Ukraine War

- The President had previously stated his intention to end the conflict in Ukraine swiftly
- Current regulations prevent Russia from competing in the 2026 World Cup
- The President initially appeared unaware of Russia's current ban from the competition.
The possibility of Russia participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could serve as an “incentive” for the country to end its war in Ukraine, according to comments made by the US President.
Since their invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian national football team has been barred from all international competitions by both FIFA and UEFA.
The President had previously stated his intention to end the conflict in Ukraine swiftly if elected to a second term in the November 2024 elections.
Current regulations prevent Russia from competing in the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico. Qualification for the tournament commenced in September 2023, with 45 slots available in addition to the automatic qualification of the three host nations.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of his administration’s taskforce for the 2026 World Cup, the President suggested that allowing Russia back into the tournament could potentially lead to the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.
During the meeting, which included FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the President initially appeared unaware of Russia’s current ban from the competition.
“I didn’t know that. Is that right?” he inquired.
“That is right,” Infantino confirmed.
“They are banned for the time being from playing but we hope that something happens and peace will happen so that Russia can be readmitted,” Infantino added.
