Election 2024: NAPO Affirms Commitment to Mining While Protecting Water Bodies
- Napo has reiterated the government's commitment to protecting water bodies
- His remarks come in response to ongoing concerns about illegal mining
- Dr. Prempeh highlighted the importance of mining
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate, has reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting water bodies and forest reserves while allowing responsible mining practices in Ghana.
He emphasized that although mining activities will continue, they will not take place in sensitive areas like water bodies or forest reserves.
His remarks come in response to ongoing concerns about illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has severely impacted the nation’s natural resources.
Dr. Prempeh highlighted the importance of mining as a key contributor to the national economy, stating, “We will never stop mining. Mining has provided significant benefits to the country; it’s essential for implementing policies like the Gold-for-Oil initiative. However, we will not allow mining in water bodies and forest reserves.”
He added that the government will introduce policies to support miners, including those involved in community and small-scale mining, by providing resources to ensure responsible practices and environmental restoration.
“We oppose the use of harmful substances like mercury that damage the environment. It was during Nana Addo’s administration that we introduced gold catchers, which have increased gold yields without compromising safety.”
Dr. Prempeh concluded with a poignant reminder of the intrinsic value of water and forests, saying, “Water is life. As the last tree dies, so does the last man. That’s why we don’t see people living in the desert. We will protect our forests and water bodies, but mining will continue.”
