Gabon has detained eight military officers following the tragic torture and death of young soldier Johan Bounda.

The incident, which has deeply shocked the nation, has sent ripples of outrage through the country under the junta-led government.

Two senior generals are also set to be questioned, according to a defense ministry announcement after a crisis meeting led by coup leader General Brice Oligui Nguema.

Bounda’s mutilated body, circulating widely on social media, has fueled public anger, prompting swift action from authorities who pledged a thorough investigation. General Oligui visited Bounda’s family to express condolences.

Bounda was reportedly accused of attempting to rob an officer’s home, with reports suggesting he was subjected to brutal torture at the military security service headquarters, known as B2.

This tragic incident adds to growing concerns following a series of harsh actions by the junta. Recently, the junta lifted a nighttime curfew imposed after their 2023 power takeover, but days earlier, young protesters had been arrested for violating the curfew, with some reportedly suffering punishment such as having their heads shaved.

While General Oligui has promised to restore civilian rule, the date for new elections remains uncertain, and he has openly expressed his ambition for the presidency.
