The ECOWAS Court has ruled in favor of Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force, in her case against the Republic of Ghana, finding that her fundamental rights were violated.

The court concluded that Ghana unlawfully arrested, rearrested, and deported Abbiusi in December 2023, causing significant harm to her personal and professional reputation.

This action was deemed a violation of Article 6 of the Liberty of People, especially since all charges against her were later dropped by the State Prosecutor.

As a result of this ruling, the court has mandated the Ghanaian government to provide compensation to Abbiusi, marking a crucial step toward justice and accountability.

Francis-Xavier Sosu, the Madina legislator who represented Abbiusi alongside Lawyer Belinda Narkey Quaynor, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision. “We feel vindicated that the ECOWAS Court has upheld the rights of Shalimar,” he stated.

The New Force reiterated its commitment to promoting justice and fairness throughout Africa, urging the Ghanaian government to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law as outlined in the Constitution.

The organization highlighted that the actions taken against Abbiusi reflect a broader trend of political persecution that poses a threat to Ghana’s democratic foundations.

They called on civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and the international community to condemn these violations and support efforts aimed at reforming government institutions.
