The Electoral Commission (EC) has requested that the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) select a new presidential candidate within the next 10 days, following the death of their flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor.
In light of this development, the EC has halted the printing of presidential ballot papers, which were nearly finalized, after receiving official notification of Madam Donkor’s passing.
On October 29, the EC stated, “The Commission has informed the GFP to arrange for a new candidate and notify us accordingly. Meanwhile, the printing of Presidential Ballot Papers has been suspended.”
The Commission also expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of Madam Akua Donkor, who passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been disclosed.
As the founder and leader of the GFP, Madam Donkor was a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, recognized for her passionate advocacy for farmers’ and women’s rights. Her passing is a significant loss for the party and her supporters as the nation approaches the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
With the elections on the horizon, the GFP must act swiftly to nominate a suitable replacement for Madam Donkor on the ballot.
