Renowned Ghanaian comedian Dr. Likee, also known as Akabenezer, has announced plans to release a film addressing the pressing issue of illegal mining, or galamsey.
The film is a response to the devastating environmental impact of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.
Galamsey has sparked widespread public outrage and protests, with organizations like the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) demanding a ban on all illegal mining activities.
Dr. Likee revealed that he has created extensive content focusing on galamsey, with the climax of his work set for release next month.
He emphasized that the film aims to highlight the detrimental effects of illegal mining practices.
“I have a whole lot of contents on galamsey. I even have a movie on it which will be released next month,” he stated. The award-winning comic actor clarified that the film is not intended to be a political commentary but rather a call to action to combat the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
“The movie is not about politics but it advises us to stop galamsey. Because all our water bodies have deteriorated. If I come abroad, I see how water bodies are preserved, but for us, it keeps deteriorating,” he added.
As the galamsey crisis continues to worsen, calls for government intervention are growing louder. While various organizations and individuals have urged the government to take decisive action against illegal mining, there has been a noticeable lack of swift response from authorities.
