Torrential rains have claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left 80 others injured in Malawi, the country’s disaster management agency reported on Wednesday.

Over the past few days, heavy rainfall, lightning, and flooding have wreaked havoc across the nation, causing widespread destruction.

Chipiliro Khamula, spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), confirmed that many homes and schools have been severely damaged, and about 48,000 individuals have been displaced. The storms have caused significant disruptions to education, with some schools being destroyed.

“We are working tirelessly to support the affected families and ensure their safety as more heavy rains are expected,” Khamula stated.

The tragedy follows a deadly lightning strike on Friday that killed four students and injured six others in the central region. The country is still recovering from the devastation of Cyclone Freddy in 2023, which killed thousands and displaced over a million people.
