BREAKING: Gyakye Quayson Walks Free — High Court Acquits Assin North MP of All Charges!
High Court ruling vindicates Quayson, with charges of forgery and false declarations dropped due to lack of evidence

- High Court rules in favor of Assin North MP, clearing him of charges related to dual citizenship.
- Prosecution fails to prove allegations of false declarations and forgery
- The ruling allows Quayson to continue his parliamentary duties without further legal hindrance
In a landmark ruling delivered on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the High Court has acquitted and discharged James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, bringing an end to a protracted legal case involving allegations of dual citizenship.
The charges stemmed from claims that Quayson held Canadian citizenship when he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections—a situation the prosecution argued breached Ghana’s Constitution. However, Quayson consistently denied the accusations, asserting that he had already renounced his Canadian citizenship before submitting his nomination forms.
Quayson’s legal team filed a “submission of no case to answer,” and the court sided with the defence, stating that the prosecution had failed to establish the core components of the alleged offences. The judge concluded that Quayson did not make any false declarations, noting that by the time he claimed exclusive allegiance to Ghana, he had already initiated the process to renounce his Canadian citizenship, indicating no dishonest intent.
The court also highlighted inconsistencies in the evidence provided by prosecution witnesses, including irregularities in passport documents and statutory declarations, which further weakened the case.
Quayson had faced five criminal charges, including perjury, forgery of travel documents, and making false declarations to the Passport Office and the Electoral Commission. With this ruling, he is now free to continue his legislative duties without legal hindrance. Following the judgment, Quayson expressed profound relief and gratitude for the court’s fair handling of the matter.
