Black Stars secure trophies during the NDC administration, while infrastructure improvements occur under the NPP
Atta Poku raises alarms about the Black Stars’ potential failure to qualify for the AFCON
He criticizes the Ghana Football Association for poor organization ahead of crucial matches
In a bold revelation, sports joiurnalist Collins Atta Poku has stated that the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, tends to secure trophies when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power, while infrastructure improvements come during the tenure of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His comments follow the Black Stars’ unexpected loss to Sudan in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, raising concerns about their chances of qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 20 years.
He pointed out that the last time the Black Stars failed to qualify for AFCON was in 2004 during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration.
“The last time the Black Stars did not qualify for the AFCON was in 2004. Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP are on the verge of a similar outcome. By November, if God does not intervene, we will miss the AFCON. Nana Akufo-Addo, when we gave you the national team in 2016, you led us to the AFCON semifinals, and in 2019, we reached the Round of 16. In Cameroon, we were eliminated at the group stage, and Côte d’Ivoire was also eliminated at the group stage,” Atta Poku said.
Atta Poku also criticized the lack of leadership from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) before the team’s trip to Libya for the match against Sudan.
He emphasized the need for better organization and support.
After four matches played, Ghana lies in third place in Group F with two points, Sudan in second place with seven points, while Angola leads with nine points, waiting to play their fourth game.
Prior to this game, Ghana drew 1-1 against Niger, lost to Angola at home by a goal to zero, and drew goalless at home against Sudan.
The Black Stars will travel to face Angola and play the last match against Niger in Ghana.
The chances of the team qualifying have become slim, with a defeat in any of the next two games likely to jeopardize the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
