Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses (EVs) on November 27, a significant move towards modernising the country’s public transport system.
The new fleet will begin test operations this week, as part of Bawumia’s vision to cut transportation costs through the adoption of electric vehicles.
Albert Adu Boahen, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), shared that the electric buses would operate on routes including Oyibi-Accra, Accra-Amasaman, and Ashaiman-Accra.
The initiative is set to reduce transport costs by an impressive 40%, with the savings benefiting both the service provider and commuters through lower fares and more reliable services.
In addition, charging infrastructure will be installed at MTTD stations across Accra to support the electric fleet.
Adu Boahen emphasized that the electric buses offer a smoother and quieter experience for passengers, and the management is committed to ensuring a seamless transition to this new mode of transport.
