Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has voiced his deep empathy for the challenges many Ghanaians, particularly those in the informal sector, are currently experiencing.

During an engagement with stakeholders in the creative arts industry on October 16, Dr. Bawumia pledged that, if elected in the 2024 general elections, his administration would prioritize initiatives aimed at easing the hardships faced by the underprivileged.

He shared his personal journey, recounting experiences in various menial jobs such as farm laborer, taxi driver, and cleaner—roles that have given him firsthand insight into the daily struggles of Ghanaians.

Speaking in pidgin, he reiterated his commitment to creating better opportunities for all, regardless of their background.

“The thing wey dey my heart for politics nu, ebi the people wey dey suffer for this country. I be the patron of Lepers Aid Ghana. Me and the lepers, we dey eat, we dey drink, because I want to help lepers in Ghana,” he stated.

“I’ve been a farm laborer, a day worker, a cleaner, and a taxi driver, so I understand the suffering people go through. I also support Mother Theresa’s soup kitchen and work with street children alongside Father Campbell.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “My heart is with the streets. The work I do is aimed at helping people. Initiatives like Free Senior High School and digitalization are making a difference.”

He also reflected on his philanthropic efforts, particularly his support for the lepers’ community at the Weija Leprosarium, where he collaborates with Rev. Father Andrew Campbell, founder of the Lepers Aid Committee.
