The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has urged the Ghanaian government to invest in film production that showcases the country’s rich, untold stories.
In a speech delivered at the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit in Accra, the King highlighted the importance of cinema in preserving culture and heritage.
Specifically, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II called for a film chronicling the life of Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson.
He emphasized Nelson’s embodiment of Ga culture, his inspirational journey, and his representation of African achievement.
The King believes Nelson’s story would be a powerful projection of African potential.

- Widely considered one of the greatest African boxers ever
The King also expressed his hope for a future where African cinema flourishes and challenges negative portrayals of the continent by foreign media. He encouraged Africans to utilize film as a tool for social change and cultural preservation.
Africa Cinema Summit Focus:
The four-day summit (October 7-10, 2024) emphasizes growth in local content production and consumption, aiming to attract increased investment in African cinema. This year’s event builds upon the success of the inaugural summit, attracting a wider range of participants and fostering collaboration within the industry. Notably, English actor of Ghanaian descent, Idris Elba, headlined the opening ceremony.
The summit also includes a Legacy Award ceremony to celebrate achievements in African cinema. Organized by the National Film Authority, the Africa Cinema Summit partners with various organizations like Filmhouse Group (Nigeria), Silverbird Cinema (Ghana), and Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria.
