In a bold statement, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has directed all NDC Members of Parliament to avoid participating in any emergency recall of the House, which is currently in recess.
Asiedu Nketiah argued that the only plausible reason for recalling Parliament at this stage, just three weeks before Ghana’s general elections, would be to facilitate corrupt activities by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), not to address any real national emergencies.
He dismissed the possibility of an emergency session, declaring, “There’s no emergency. Parliament will only be recalled so they can continue their corrupt activities. We won’t participate in their schemes today or tomorrow.” His remarks were made during a rally as part of his ongoing national campaign.
This directive follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared unconstitutional the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to vacate four parliamentary seats, including three held by NPP members, for contesting the upcoming election.
While the Speaker cited constitutional provisions to justify his action, the Supreme Court ruled 5-2 that MPs can only vacate their seats under specific circumstances.
Asiedu Nketiah further criticized the ruling, accusing the Court of overstepping its authority and undermining Ghana’s democracy.
He emphasized that protecting Parliament is essential for safeguarding democracy and vowed that the NDC would not allow any force to weaken the institution.
