In a call for a peaceful electoral process, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged political parties to focus on presenting their policies rather than resorting to divisive or hateful rhetoric.
Addressing political leaders ahead of the December 7 elections, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful campaign environment that fosters national unity.
He warned against actions or statements that could incite violence and called for a constructive dialogue.
The Asantehene made these comments during a visit from Kofi Akpaloo, the Presidential Candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who sought the Asantehene’s support for the upcoming elections.
Otumfuo expressed hope that the elections would showcase Ghana’s democratic maturity and urged all stakeholders to keep peace and progress at the forefront.
Otumfuo also shared his personal connection to the elections, stating that it felt as though his own children were competing, and he prayed for a peaceful outcome. “Winning an election takes patience,” he said, adding that he hoped Kofi Akpaloo would prevail and that peace would reign throughout the election process.
Meanwhile, Kofi Akpaloo took the opportunity to call for international pressure on those who might attempt to disrupt the elections. He urged the US Embassy to collaborate with European counterparts in imposing visa restrictions on individuals looking to cause electoral chaos.
Akpaloo expressed confidence that the upcoming election would be peaceful, citing the recent announcement by the US Embassy about denying visas to those involved in election-related violence.
Akpaloo concluded by emphasizing the importance of fair elections and monitoring the results to ensure transparency, while reinforcing the message that peace and cooperation should guide the nation’s electoral process.
