President Nana Akufo-Addo has warmly congratulated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, on her election as the new Commonwealth Secretary-General.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on October 26, President Akufo-Addo praised Botchwey’s commitment to inclusivity and progress, expressing confidence that her leadership will positively influence the Commonwealth.
He expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth leaders who endorsed Botchwey’s candidacy, recognizing their crucial support during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa.
The President noted that her election not only honors Ghana but also enhances the nation’s standing on the global stage.
Elected on October 25 after a competitive selection process featuring candidates from various Commonwealth nations, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey becomes one of the few African leaders to hold this prestigious role.
With over 20 years of diplomatic experience, including her impactful tenure as Foreign Minister, she is ready to implement her progressive vision for the Commonwealth, emphasizing unity, equitable development, and strengthened cooperation.
President Akufo-Addo expressed immense pride in her achievement, stating, “Today, I am filled with pride and joy as I congratulate Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
