- A nationwide service to deliver 70,000 unclaimed passports directly to applicants
- Operational reforms and technology upgrades to improve passport processing efficiency
- Plans to tighten issuance guidelines, limiting use to government officials and foreign service personnel
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has unveiled plans to clear the backlog of 70,000 uncollected passports by implementing a nationwide courier system.
According to Ablakwa, an immediate audit will identify applicants, ensuring the unclaimed passports reach their rightful owners.
“We will introduce a courier system to deliver passports directly to applicants, wherever they may be. With proper addresses, applicants will be contacted,” he explained during an interview.
He further emphasized that digitization and reforms at the passport office would enhance efficiency and streamline processing times.
Touching on diplomatic passports, Ablakwa criticized current issuance practices, insisting that they should be strictly reserved for government officials and foreign service personnel. He announced plans to review the system to prevent misuse and bolster Ghana’s international reputation.
