Ghana football legend Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’ has voiced his concerns over the current state of football in the country, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The national team finished at the bottom of Group F with only three points, marking a significant setback for a country that has historically been a powerhouse in African football.
Pele, a three-time African Footballer of the Year and member of the 1982 AFCON-winning Black Stars squad, expressed disappointment over the Black Stars’ performance and the decline in local football’s prominence.
In an interview with Panafricafootball, Pele called for immediate action from stakeholders to rebuild Ghanaian football.
“Time changes, and we’re talking about three decades of change,” Pele said. “We must stop looking back and focus on the future, working hard to achieve what we want to achieve.”
He stressed that the key to revitalizing the nation’s football lies in hard work and organization. “To be a great football nation, you need to put your house in order. It’s about hard work and ensuring everything is structured to get results.”
Pele also highlighted football’s potential to unify the nation. “Football is one of the most powerful tools to bring the country together and foster unity,” he added.
With Ghana football at a crossroads, Pele’s call to action serves as a reminder for the country to regroup, restructure, and rebuild its once-glorious footballing legacy.
