Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has spoken out against men who neglect their financial responsibilities to their families.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, the 62-year-old actor emphasized that those who fail to provide for their households “have no right to intimacy.”
Kanayo stressed the importance of financial responsibility in marriage, asserting that men are expected to support their families through hard work, as reflected in sacred teachings. He noted that this duty is not just a societal expectation but a moral obligation rooted in religious scripture.
In his message, the actor advised women against shielding their husbands from financial accountability, warning that such actions could lead to “laziness and irresponsibility” in men.
He urged young women to be discerning when choosing life partners, emphasizing the need to select men who understand their obligations.
“I woke up to a trend that I found disturbing. It’s useless and dangerous — a man depending on another man to feed him. The most troubling part is that women want to defend their husbands so that whatever is happening in their homes does not go public,” Kanayo stated.
“But sometimes that defense can hinder a man’s progress. Every man has a responsibility to his family. As we read in holy books, a man who does not provide for his family is worse than…”
He further asserted, “…a man who cannot feed his family has no need to engage intimately with a woman. It is a responsibility. This is a message to young women: Know who you marry.”
Expressing concern over the pressure placed on women when men neglect their responsibilities, Kanayo shared a personal experience: “I have been disturbed by this. Do not defend a man to the point of enabling his irresponsibility. He should not evade his bills, especially when your children are still growing. Paying school fees and other expenses adds significant burden to women.”
He concluded, “This creates pressure on women. I have witnessed situations where a husband ignores issues, like the wife’s car breaking down. When conversations became more open, it highlighted the need for every man to be hardworking.”
