The Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), emphasizing that the time for this reform is now.
The debate surrounding the election of MMDCEs has been ongoing in Ghana, with supporters arguing that it would enhance accountability and strengthen local democracy.
However, the issue has been contentious, particularly regarding whether the elections should be partisan or non-partisan.
During his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Ahmed Ibrahim advocated for a non-partisan approach to the elections, believing that it would bolster local governance and ensure fair development across the country.
“I strongly agree that MMDCEs should be elected, but I disagree that it should be done on a partisan basis,” he remarked. “This has been the central point of debate in Parliament. While some advocate for a partisan approach, we have proposed a non-partisan model.”
Ibrahim further highlighted that recent parliamentary election results show substantial public support for the non-partisan method, stating, “We have 184 members in our caucus, and you have 88. This indicates that Ghanaians overwhelmingly support the election of MMDCEs on a non-partisan basis.”
He concluded by stressing that the current moment presents a unique opportunity for the much-needed reform to take place.
