WhatsApp Shutdown Alert: Full List of Phones Losing Access in 2025

Brace for disconnection as WhatsApp phases out support for older devices—check if yours is on the chopping block

Story Highlights
  • 18 Android models and 3 iPhones will no longer work with the app.
  • Android devices running KitKat and older iOS versions will be affected
  • Meta updates ensure security and functionality with newer devices

As we step into the New Year, some older smartphone models will bid farewell to WhatsApp.

The popular messaging app will stop supporting 18 Android models and 3 iPhone models due to changes in compatibility requirements.

The shift begins January 1, 2025, as WhatsApp phases out support for Android KitKat OS and older versions. While some phones running KitKat can upgrade to newer operating systems, others—locked out of updates by manufacturers—are left behind. These models risk being permanently incompatible unless owners attempt risky, warranty-voiding modifications.

Affected Android Models:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

The impact widens on May 5, 2025, when WhatsApp drops support for iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1. While newer iPhones can update their OS, the following models are stuck on iOS 12.5.7 and will lose access:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, says these updates are necessary to maintain security and ensure compatibility with newer devices. Both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business users on affected models should consider upgrading their devices to stay connected.
