14 Universities Receive Presidential Charters in Ghana

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has conferred Presidential Charters on fourteen university colleges, marking a major achievement for Ghana’s higher education sector. The milestone, celebrated on December 20, 2024, in Accra, underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and national development.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, President Akufo-Addo called the event a “transformative milestone” in Ghana’s tertiary education history. He lauded the recipient institutions for their dedication and vision, noting that the charters were granted after a rigorous evaluation process by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

“The grant of a Presidential Charter represents the highest recognition that a tertiary institution in Ghana can achieve,” President Akufo-Addo stated. “It reflects the institutions’ adherence to high standards in governance, quality assurance, academic delivery, research, and community engagement.”

The institutions receiving Presidential Charters are:

  2. KAAF University College
  3. Heritage Christian University College
  4. Ensign Global College
  5. University College of Gold Coast
  6. Knutsford University College
  7. Thrivus Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Technology
  8. Nobel International Business School
  9. Entrance University College of Health Sciences
  10. Accra Metropolitan University College
  11. African University College of Communications
  12. Garden City University College
  13. Family Health University College
  14. Academic City University College

What the Charters Mean for These Institutions

With these charters, the awarded institutions are now authorized to confer their own degrees, diplomas, and certificates, without the need to affiliate with other established universities. This accomplishment is expected to strengthen Ghana’s position as a key player in African and global higher education.
