A late-night inferno has gutted six shops at the Bantama Racecourse Market in Kumasi, leaving traders heartbroken as goods worth thousands of cedis were lost to the flames.
The fire, which broke out around 9:00 pm, consumed perishable goods such as watermelons, grapes, and apples, alongside two cold storage shops. Traders estimate their losses at a staggering GH₵5 million, with no items salvaged from the blaze.
Hajia Meeli, the Deputy Queen Mother for watermelon sellers at the market, urgently called for support and better safety measures. “We had closed for the day when we received calls about the fire. We’ve lost about five truckloads of goods, worth around GH₵5 million. We need help,” she told Adom News.
Affected traders are now appealing to authorities for immediate assistance and for enhanced safety protocols to prevent future disasters.
