The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed serious concern over the violence and unrest that followed the 2024 general elections.
In a powerful statement, the Bishops condemned the acts of violence, looting, and rioting that have disrupted peace in various parts of the country, leading to deaths, property destruction, and deepened divisions among citizens.
“These actions are unacceptable and contradict the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that our nation holds dear,” the Bishops declared.
The Conference called for an immediate halt to all violent activities and urged Ghanaians to preserve the peace that has been central to the nation’s democratic processes. They emphasized that resorting to violence to express political disagreement undermines democracy and harms society’s most vulnerable.
The Bishops specifically appealed to political party leaders to show responsible leadership during this critical period. They urged leaders to condemn unlawful actions by their supporters and actively promote peace and respect for the rule of law.
“Your role as leaders goes beyond the pursuit of power; it involves guiding your followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and safeguarding the well-being of every Ghanaian,” they stated.
The Bishops also called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to stay vigilant and professional in managing the situation. They stressed the importance of decisive action against perpetrators of violence, regardless of political affiliation, ensuring fairness, and protecting citizens and property.
“Justice must be served,” the statement affirmed.
The Bishops invited religious leaders, civil society groups, and the public to unite in restoring peace and national unity. They highlighted the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and unity in overcoming differences and moving forward together.
“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing after these turbulent events,” the Bishops concluded, expressing hope that with collective commitment, the nation will emerge stronger and more united.
The Bishops’ statement joins growing calls for calm and responsible actions as Ghana moves forward from its tightly contested elections.
