The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reeling from a wave of high-profile defeats in the 2024 parliamentary elections, as several prominent Members of Parliament (MPs) lose their seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
These shocking losses are reshaping the political landscape, with only a few NPP MPs holding on to their positions.
Among the notable casualties is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa, who was defeated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who won with 14,229 votes against Hammond’s 13,275. Other key figures, including Dakoa Newman (Okaikwei South) and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (Ablekuma West), also saw disappointing results, with Owusu-Ekuful securing just 26,575 votes. NDC’s Rev Kweku Addo claimed the Ablekuma West seat with 31,866 votes.
In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey was unseated by Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC, who garnered 29,755 votes, while Quartey only reached 23,345 votes. Sylvester Tetteh of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro lost to NDC’s Okle Felix Akwetey, who won with 37,473 votes to Tetteh’s 27,888 votes.
Twum Barima of Dormaa East narrowly lost to NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa, who secured 12,310 votes compared to Barima’s 12,050.
These defeats signal a rising NDC wave, forcing the NPP to reassess its strategy and grapple with the evolving political tide.
