- Kwabena Agyepong predicts the NPP will significantly reduce the NDC's traditional vote share in the Ashanti Region
- The NPP is confident that Dr. Bawumia's popularity and the presence of local candidate Manaf Ibrahim will sway votes in their favor
- Agyepong believes the NPP will make inroads in historically NDC-dominated areas
Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, senior political aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will make significant strides into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) heartlands in the Ashanti Region and zongo communities in the upcoming election.
In an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show on December 4, 2024, Kwabena Agyepong confidently stated that the NPP plans to make major inroads into the NDC’s usual stronghold, particularly in Asawase, Kumasi, an area that has long supported the NDC.
He believes that with Bawumia at the helm and the NPP’s renewed support base in the region, the party will capture a large portion of the 20%-plus share the NDC traditionally garners.
Kwabena Agyepong highlighted the potential shift in voter allegiance, predicting that the NPP will cut into the NDC’s anticipated 30% support in the region. He stressed that the NPP’s strategy, backed by local candidate Manaf Ibrahim and Bawumia’s popularity, would significantly impact the NDC’s stronghold.
While Asawase has remained a political puzzle for the NPP, with a strong Muslim and Northern demographic, Agyepong remains confident that the party’s efforts will challenge NDC dominance in the region.
He also mentioned that the NPP is gaining ground in other historically weak areas, such as Bono East, and sees at least seven constituencies switching from the NDC to the NPP.
Kwabena Agyepong emphasized the strategic importance of the Zongo Development Fund, which was created under President Akufo-Addo’s administration to boost development in Muslim-majority areas, potentially swaying votes toward the NPP.
“This election will be competitive, with a lot of movement. The NDC will be in for a tough race,” Kwabena Agyepong concluded.
