Mohammed Ibrahim, a farmer and self-proclaimed leader of a Revolutionary Group called “Kanawu,” has been sentenced to four years in prison for spreading false news.
Ibrahim, who made claims about a plot involving the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and Interior Minister Henry Quartey recruiting fake police officers to murder citizens during the 2024 elections, was convicted of three charges: publication of false news, threat of harm, and offensive conduct likely to breach peace.
In a video posted on social media in September 2024, Ibrahim, wearing a red military beret, alleged that the police in the Ashanti Region were involved in these illegal activities. He further threatened violence, even targeting the Interior Minister.
The court found Ibrahim guilty, sentencing him to three years for the false news and offensive conduct charges, and four years for the threat of harm. All sentences will run concurrently, meaning Ibrahim will serve the longest sentence of four years in hard labor.
