A Melbourne driver made a dramatic and unexpected stop on the Monash Freeway after discovering a deadly snake inside her car, slithering up her leg.
The woman, who had been driving at 80km/h (50mph), felt something on her foot and looked down to find the venomous reptile, later identified as a tiger snake, one of the world’s most dangerous snakes.
Victoria Police were called to the scene after the woman was seen frantically waving for help on the side of the road.
Police reported that the woman was “hiss-terically” trying to flag down passing cars, clearly shaken by the ordeal.
She told officers she had managed to fend off the snake and weave through traffic before pulling over and leaping out of the car in a state of shock.
Melbourne Snake Control was dispatched to safely remove the tiger snake, and the driver was taken to the hospital for a suspected bite.
Fortunately, she is recovering well. In a social media post, Melbourne Snake Control confirmed the snake was relocated safely “well away from houses, people, and pets.”
Witnesses in traffic were left stunned as the snake was extracted from the car, with some drivers recording the incident on their phones.
Officers praised the woman’s quick thinking and composure in handling the frightening situation, despite the distressing circumstances.
