MTN Bright Scholarship Recipients Celebrate First Class Honours at KNUST Graduation

Launched in 2018, the MTN Bright Scholarship has made a significant impact, supporting over 1,000 students by covering their tuition, accommodation, stipends, and providing laptops.

This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 10, which emphasize quality education and the reduction of inequalities.

On November 22, 2024, the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi buzzed with excitement as five MTN Bright Scholarship beneficiaries graduated with First Class Honours, celebrating their academic achievements.

For Gyano Charty Joseph, Sylvester Selase Agorbortu, Derrick Mawusi, Emmanuel Yuorkuu, and Evans Aryeh this milestone was not just a personal victory but a testament to the transformative power of education made possible by MTN Ghana.

Overcoming Financial Struggles

Each of these young men faced daunting financial challenges that threatened their educational aspirations.

Gyano Charty Joseph – BSC. Telecommunication Engineering – First Class Honours

Gyano Charty Joseph, who graduated with a BSc in Telecommunications Engineering, shared how the loss of his father when he was in junior high school placed a heavy burden on his family. “My elder brother carried the financial weight, and pursuing my education seemed almost impossible until MTN came to my aid,” he reflected. “The scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies, and I’m proud to have graduated with First Class Honours.”

Derrick Mawusi – BSC. Chemical Engineering

Derrick Mawusi, another recipient, recalled the lengths he went to fund his education. “I was selling gari to pay my school fees,” he said. “When I received the MTN Bright Scholarship in my third year, it changed everything for me. I can’t express how grateful I am to MTN for this support.”

Sylvester Selase Agorbortu – BSC. Telecommunications Engineering

Sylvester Selase Agorbortu, hailing from a family of twelve, faced the challenge of funding his education alongside three siblings in university. “The financial strain was immense,” he explained. “I had almost given up on my studies until MTN stepped in, covering my tuition, accommodation, and providing a laptop. This support was a turning point in my education.”

Emmanuel Yuorkuu – BSC Chemical Engineering

Emmanuel Yuorkuu, who graduated with a BSc in Chemical Engineering, similarly faced financial hurdles, often working in construction to fund his education. “I had to work long hours just to pay for my fees. When MTN provided support, it allowed me to stop working and focus on my studies. Today, I am proud to be the Best Student in my class,” he said, emphasizing the need for continued support for students in need.

Evans Arye – BSC Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Evans Aryeh, a 25-year-old graduate with a BSc in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, shared the inspiring story behind his decision to apply for the MTN Scholarship.

“I was searching for scholarships online when my dad, who knows someone at MTN, suggested I apply for the MTN Scholarship. I applied and was awarded the scholarship. The application process is one of the most user-friendly I’ve encountered. MTN provides us with stipends, airtime, and fully covers tuition fees, regardless of the amount.”

Evans’ hard work and dedication paid off as he graduated as the best student in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

He expressed his gratitude to MTN Ghana for supporting him throughout his studies and encouraged them to continue their efforts to assist others.

The stories of Gyano, Derrick, Sylvester, and Emmanuel exemplify the profound impact of the MTN Bright Scholarship.
