With just two months until Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House, the president-elect and convicted felon is escalating his battle against the media.
His legal team has filed a flurry of lawsuits against outlets they accuse of unfairly targeting him, as concerns mount over press freedom in a potential second Trump term.
Recently, Trump’s lawyer demanded $10 billion in damages from the New York Times and publisher Penguin Random House, claiming false and defamatory reporting in articles critical of Trump.
The letter, sent just days before the election, accuses specific reporters and the Times of being politically motivated and conducting a campaign of “industrial-scale libel.”
Trump’s legal threats extend beyond the Times. He’s also sued CBS News, alleging election interference over its 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, and he’s targeted the Daily Beast and other outlets for what he sees as misleading and damaging coverage.
These lawsuits reflect his long-standing disdain for media criticism, raising concerns about the impact of his return on press freedom in the U.S.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has warned that Trump’s ongoing attacks on the media present a “clear and direct danger” to free press, a sentiment echoed by Reporters Without Borders.
