Kofi Akpaloo, leader and flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), is taking legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) for including the image of the late Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) candidate, on the 2024 presidential ballot papers.

Mr. Akpaloo raised concerns that the inclusion of Donkor’s image could unduly affect the election outcome, given that the candidate had passed away.

He argued that printing her image might influence the vote tally, potentially leading to a runoff.

Speaking on the Lawson TV/Radio’s Election Home program, Mr. Akpaloo stated that if a new GFP flagbearer had been approved, the EC would have reprinted the ballots accordingly.

“The presidential election is based on percentages, and if Akua Donkor’s image is printed on the ballot paper, she will receive votes, which will increase the total vote count and reduce the percentage of some candidates, potentially leading to a runoff.”

He emphasized that the issue is not politically motivated, clarifying that he has not met with the NPP to discuss the matter.

Mr. Akpaloo further questioned the EC’s stance, asking, “If John Mahama or Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had passed away, would the EC have included their images on the ballot papers?”
