The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused former President Mahama of orchestrating support for independent parliamentary candidates in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking to a lively crowd in Bekwai on Tuesday morning, Wontumi specifically pointed to a parliamentary candidate in the area, alleging that Mahama is funding this individual to undermine the NPP’s vote count.

He asserted that all such candidates are destined for failure.

“There is a man here pretending to be part of the NPP,” Wontumi stated. “He uses our party colors on his posters but he is not affiliated with us. He is deceiving people.”

Wontumi recounted an encounter with this candidate: “He came to my house with Kwabena Nyame, an NPP activist, offering me schnapps and money to help him remove our MP, Joe Wise. He attempted to bribe me.”

He emphasized his loyalty to Joe Wise, who serves as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, questioning what this candidate could possibly achieve for the constituency if successful in his efforts to unseat Wise.

“This was back in 2020, and he didn’t heed my advice. Instead, he chose to run as an independent candidate, engaging in actions that have been detrimental to us in this constituency.”

Wontumi then made a bold claim regarding the support for these independent candidates. “I want to make it clear: John Mahama is behind those running as independents here in the Ashanti Region,” he declared. “The NDC knows we will win the election decisively, so Mahama is financing these candidates to reduce our votes. They have been meeting with the NDC.”

Despite these accusations, Wontumi confidently predicted that these candidates would struggle to make an impact. “Let them know they won’t even secure 2% of the votes in December,” he warned.

“I want to emphasize that I, the governor of Ashanti, am present in Bekwai. If he gets even 2%, he should consider it a victory.”
