Today marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, a leader renowned for his unwavering commitment to the people.
In a statement from the Rawlings Foundation and the JJ Rawlings Family, he was celebrated as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a steadfast friend to millions both in Ghana and around the globe.
Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, affectionately known as “The People’s Man,” is remembered for his dedication to justice, freedom, and accountability, serving as a model of African leadership.
“Jerry John Rawlings remains The People’s Man: A leader who devoted his life to serving the ordinary people,” the statement declared.
It emphasized his lifelong advocacy for governments in Africa to genuinely serve their citizens.
Mr. Rawlings entered Ghana’s political scene in 1979 during a time of socio-economic crisis, where his decisive leadership sparked a movement for change.
As a young Air Force pilot and leader of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), he inspired a new political awareness among Ghanaians.
His political journey continued as Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) from 1981 to 1992, and later as the first president of the Fourth Republic from 1992 to 2001, making him Ghana’s longest-serving leader.
He also founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a significant force in Ghanaian politics.
Reflecting on his legacy, the statement highlighted Rawlings’ significant contributions to Ghana’s socio-economic recovery and growth, as well as his courage in confronting injustice and opposing the exploitation of Africa’s resources.
“Jerry John Rawlings has indeed left an indelible mark in Ghana and across Africa,” the statement concluded.
