The Electoral Commission (EC) announced at the recent IPAC meeting that it will resume printing Presidential Ballot Papers, which had been halted following the death of Madam Akua Donkor, the Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

On November 5, 2024, the Commission received nomination papers for Mr. Philip Appiah Kubi as the new GFP candidate.

However, upon review, the EC determined that Mr. Appiah Kubi did not meet the nomination requirements and has consequently been disqualified.

As a result, the positions on the Presidential Ballot Paper will remain unchanged.

While Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 127 and the 1992 Constitution do not specifically address the scenario of a presidential candidate’s death, the EC is guided by Sub-Regulation 5 of Regulation 10 of C.I. 127, which states that if a duly nominated candidate withdraws after ballot papers have been printed, the papers may still include that candidate’s name and details.

The EC plans to review C.I. 127 alongside stakeholders after the 2024 elections to develop provisions for situations involving the death of a presidential candidate.

Additionally, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed appreciation for the Voter Register summaries released by the Commission earlier that day.

They requested the return of the external hard drive containing the Voter Register, which they had initially declined to collect on November 6, 2024.
