Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has officially removed Baltasar Ebang Engonga from his post as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF).
This follows Engonga’s imprisonment on corruption charges and his involvement in a notorious scandal linked to explicit videos that attracted widespread attention.
The presidential decree, issued on November 6, 2024, announced the appointment of Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo as the new head of ANIF.
A highly experienced legal professional, Obiang Avomo previously served as a magistrate at the Court of Accounts of Equatorial Guinea.
He holds a law degree from the National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE) and has held several key roles in the government, including Director General of Contract and Market Studies at the Ministry of Finance, and General Secretary at both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Mines, Industry, and Energy.
The swift appointment of Obiang Avomo is seen as part of a broader effort by the government to restore public trust in the agency and steer it through the fallout of the scandal.
