Edu has stepped down from his position as Arsenal’s sporting director, a role he held since being promoted from technical director in November 2022.

The Brazilian rejoined the Gunners in the summer of 2019 and previously played for the club from 2001 to 2005, winning two league titles, including one as part of the unbeaten ‘Invincibles’ team in 2003-04.

“This was an incredibly hard decision to make,” Edu said on Monday. “Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the club and its supporters nothing but the best.”

Edu played a pivotal role in bringing manager Mikel Arteta to the club, leading to an FA Cup victory at the end of Arteta’s first season. Although major trophies have eluded Arsenal since then, Edu has been credited with helping the team regain its status as serious title contenders.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Edu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with exceptional colleagues across the men’s, women’s, and academy teams, especially highlighting his friendship with Arteta.

During Edu’s tenure, Arsenal finished as Premier League runners-up in the last two seasons, both times to Manchester City.

Key signings like Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice joined under his watch, although some earlier signings, such as David Luiz and Willian, had less impact.

Josh Kroenke, Arsenal’s co-chair, acknowledged Edu’s contributions, stating, “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense dedication to the club. Change and evolution are part of our journey, and we remain focused on our strategy to win major trophies.”

Arsenal has also seen changes off the field recently, with Richard Garlick appointed as managing director at the start of the season, following the departure of CEO Vinai Venkatesham. The club is set to appoint James King as director of football operations; King previously worked at Arsenal before serving as general counsel for the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Arsenal declined to comment on the situation when approached by the BBC.
