President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially enacted the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024, a significant advancement for the nation’s shipping and logistics sector.

This legislation, approved by Parliament in July and signed into law on October 18, 2024, empowers the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) with enhanced regulatory powers over sea, air, and land transportation, fostering a more competitive and equitable commercial shipping environment in Ghana.

In a statement released on October 31, 2024, the GSA announced its strengthened capacity to promote transparency in pricing, uphold service quality, and position Ghana as a leading hub for international trade. This legislative achievement aligns with the GSA’s 50th anniversary, reflecting its long-standing dedication to fair trade practices.

Originally established as the Ghana Shippers’ Council in 1974 and rebranded as the Ghana Shippers’ Authority in 1998, the organization has consistently aimed to enhance the trade landscape.

The GSA expressed profound gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this legislative milestone, highlighting the importance of collaboration in its success. To facilitate effective implementation, the Authority has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign to inform stakeholders of their rights and responsibilities under the new law.

Additionally, the GSA is collecting feedback for a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to support the law’s operational framework and encourages stakeholders to actively engage in this effort to create a sustainable and resilient shipping ecosystem.
