A Polish radio station has sparked controversy by replacing its human journalists with AI-generated “presenters.”
OFF Radio Krakow, based in the southern city of Krakow, relaunched this week with three AI-powered avatars designed to appeal to younger audiences.
The station’s head, Marcin Pulit, argues that AI is an opportunity to reach new listeners and explore pressing social issues.
However, the move has faced backlash from journalists and critics who argue that it sets a dangerous precedent for the media industry. Mateusz Demski, a former journalist at the station, published an open letter protesting the replacement of human employees with AI.
He warned that this could lead to a future where experienced journalists and creative professionals are replaced by machines.
The Polish government has also weighed in on the issue. Digital affairs minister Krzysztof Gawkowski has called for legislation to regulate AI, expressing concerns about its potential misuse.
He emphasized that AI should be used for people, not against them.
While the station’s AI-powered presenters may be a novelty, the controversy surrounding their introduction raises important questions about the future of journalism and the role of technology in media.
