CJ Decriminalizes Suicide Attempts in Ghana

Story Highlights
  • Attempted suicide is no longer a prosecutable offense
  • Amendments to the Criminal Offences Act and the Mental Health Act support this directive
  • Judges and magistrates must adhere to these new guidelines

The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, has issued a directive to all Circuit Court judges and magistrates, stating that individuals who attempt suicide will no longer be prosecuted or convicted.

This decision is in line with a recent amendment to the law, the Offences Amendment Act (2023).

The Chief Justice emphasized that the decriminalization of suicide attempts aims to provide support and compassion to those struggling with mental health issues, rather than imposing further punishment.

She urged judges and magistrates to adhere to this directive and ensure that individuals seeking help are treated with understanding and care.
