Renowned Ghanaian broadcaster Serwaa Amihere has voiced her frustration over the struggling Black Stars, Ghana’s senior national football team, as they face potential elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In a post on her X account, Amihere expressed her concerns about the team’s poor performance, particularly following their recent defeat to Sudan in the AFCON qualifiers, where Sudan is now coached by former Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah.

Reflecting on her childhood, Amihere recalled how rarely she heard about the Black Stars, aside from the legendary Abedi “Pele” Ayew. Her passion for football ignited when Ghana qualified for the World Cup under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, during the challenging “dumsor” power crisis.

“We played in Ghana some years ago, and everyone was talking about Junior Agogo, but I can’t remember the exact year,” she remarked. “The only time I’ve seen Ghana win a cup was when Dede Ayew, Agyemang Badu, and others triumphed.”

While Amihere acknowledged the Black Stars’ past successes, she lamented their lack of recent major trophies. She praised iconic players like Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng, and Asamoah Gyan, as well as a goalkeeper from a memorable Kalyppo advert.

However, she expressed disappointment in the current team’s underwhelming results, which have left fans anticipating losses and losing interest in matches altogether.

“What happened? Are our players not good, or is the management failing? And why is Kwesi Appiah finding success with another country when many Ghanaians believed he wasn’t right for the Black Stars?” Amihere questioned, seeking insights from fellow football enthusiasts @saddickadams, @fentuo_, @garyalsmith, and @otiadjei.

Background:
Ghana currently sits in third place in Group F with two points after four matches. Sudan is in second with seven points, while Angola leads with nine, awaiting its fourth game. Recent results for the Black Stars include a 1-1 draw with Niger, a 1-0 loss to Angola at home, and a goalless draw against Sudan. The team’s future in the AFCON qualifiers remains uncertain as they struggle to regain their competitive edge.
