Election 2024: EC Urges Public to Stop Spreading Fake News and Misinformation
- EC has issued a strong warning against the dissemination of misinformation
- The Commission does not have the authority to determine election outcomes
- She reiterated that the EC’s responsibility is solely to announce the results
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has issued a strong warning against the dissemination of misinformation as Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections.
During a significant Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, she emphasized the need for the public to receive accurate and truthful information about the EC’s role in the electoral process.
Mensa clarified that the Commission does not have the authority to determine election outcomes or appoint candidates as president.
“The EC can never make anybody president, and I believe we all recognize this. We must not spread misinformation, fake news, or disinformation that misleads citizens into thinking the EC can appoint a president,” she stated.
She reiterated that the EC’s responsibility is solely to announce the results based on the voters’ choices.
“I want to reiterate, quoting Dr. Hassan Ayariga, that the EC cannot make anyone a president. The EC simply declares who the voters choose as their president. It is the Ghanaian voter who elects a president, not the EC. We are here to declare the voters’ choice,” she added.
