  • The Minority accuses the government of attempting to shield Dr. Asiamah from legal accountability

The Minority in Parliament has called for Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah to refrain from engaging with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) until his nomination as Governor is officially confirmed by the Council of State.

In a statement to the media today, the Minority, led by Hon. Dr. Gideon Boako, MP for Tano North, voiced strong concerns over Dr. Asiamah’s involvement in the central bank’s activities before receiving the necessary approval.

They questioned the potential ramifications of his assumption of office without the Council’s endorsement and the uncertain situation if the Council were to reject his nomination.

The Minority also raised alarms about the implications of Dr. Asiamah’s pending criminal charges, arguing that the legal process must run its full course before he takes on such a significant role. Dr. Boako also expressed dismay that President Mahama had appointed Dr. Asiamah despite these unresolved legal issues, stressing that it is critical for the individual in such a pivotal position to demonstrate accountability and transparency.

Further, the Minority voiced suspicion that the government may be attempting to shield Dr. Asiamah from accountability by halting the legal proceedings against him, adding weight to their argument that a person with potential criminal convictions should not head the central bank, especially amid the IMF program’s demand for financial discipline.

The opposition party insists that the new Bank of Ghana Governor must be above reproach to uphold Ghana’s financial integrity.
