The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare, has held discussions with Kumasi Asante Kotoko officials following the fatal stabbing of a fan during Sunday’s Ghana Premier League match at Nsoatreman F.C.

Accompanied by senior Ghana Police Service officials, Dampare met with Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua I, chairman of Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee, and Kwasi Appiah, the club’s head of sporting affairs who led the delegation at the match.

Sources reveal the meeting was not part of the investigation into the tragic death of Francis Frimpong, a Kotoko supporter who was fatally stabbed during the match.

The IGP also personally reached out to Frimpong’s family to express condolences and assure them of a thorough investigation. Additionally, Dr. Dampare assured Kotoko that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and that the full force of the law would be applied.

So far, three suspects have been arrested: former employment and labor relations minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph. Police found bloodstains on clothing and a pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition at the home of suspect Agyemang Duah Owusu, raising concerns about rising violence at football matches.

Kotoko’s 1-0 defeat to Nsoatreman has been overshadowed by the violence, which also led to a brawl on the pitch.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged ten players for their involvement in the altercation.

Six of those players, including Nsoatreman’s Stephen Diyou and Abdul Rahaman Mohammed, face disciplinary action alongside Kotoko’s Mohammed Camara and Justice Blay for unsporting behavior.
