8th Parliament Wrap-Up: NDC Minority Was Formidable and Relentless – Afenyo-Markin
Majority Leader reflects on the challenges of navigating a divided Parliament
- Afenyo-Markin labeled the NDC Minority as "tough, stubborn, and difficult," making agreements elusive
- The Majority Leader faced criticism for his combative approach
- Lack of Minority support hindered the completion of key government initiatives
As Ghana’s 8th Parliament draws to a close, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has described the term as one of intense challenges, attributing much of the difficulty to the unyielding stance of the NDC Minority.
Reflecting in Parliament on Monday, January 6, 2025, Afenyo-Markin characterized the NDC Minority as a “tough, stubborn, difficult side” that made consensus-building nearly impossible.
“Mr. Speaker, many did not understand why I appeared combative on numerous occasions. Some expected me, as Majority Leader, to simply ‘reach out,’ but they didn’t know the intense pressure I faced,” he noted.
He further explained, “The Minority was relentless—firm in their pursuit of power. Agreements were elusive because they were, understandably, focused on their political ambitions.”
Afenyo-Markin lamented the impediments this posed to government business, stating that many initiatives intended for political and principled purposes remained incomplete due to the lack of Minority support.
This reflection highlights the challenges of navigating a deeply divided Parliament, setting the stage for reflections and lessons as Ghana transitions to its next legislative phase.
