The 2024 general elections, held on Saturday, December 7, saw significant wins and losses for key figures in the sports sector. Here’s a look at how prominent sports personalities fared in the elections:

Mustapha Ussif
The current Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, successfully retained his seat as the Member of Parliament for Yagaba/Kubori Constituency. Ussif, who regained his seat in 2020 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket, will continue to serve the constituency after his victory in 2024.

Evans Bobie Opoku
On the other hand, Ussif’s deputy, Evans Bobie Opoku, lost his re-election bid in the Asunafo North Constituency in the Ahafo Region. Opoku, who had won the seat in 2020, was defeated by Mohammed Haruna of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Haruna Iddrisu
Haruna Iddrisu, the financier of Karela United, secured another term as the MP for Tamale South Constituency. Having held the seat since 2004, this victory marks his sixth consecutive term in Parliament.

Ignatius Baffour Awuah
Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner of Nsoatreman FC and Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, suffered a defeat in the 2024 elections. He lost his Sunyani West seat to Millicent Yeboah Amankwah of the NDC, marking the end of his parliamentary tenure.

Frederick Acheampong
Frederick Acheampong, a member of the Ghana Football Association Executive Council and a hopeful NPP candidate for the Ahafo Ano South East Constituency, fell short in his bid for Parliament. He lost to the NDC’s Yakubu Mohammed.

Adams Abdul-Salam
Adams Abdul-Salam, the younger brother of New Edubiase FC owner Abdul Salam Yakubu, successfully retained his seat for the NDC in the New Edubiase Constituency, located in the Ashanti Region.

John Peter Amewu
John Peter Amewu, the owner of Hohoe United and Minister for Railways Development, was unseated in the Hohoe constituency. He lost his seat to NDC candidate Thomas Worlanyo.

Pius Enam Hadzide
Pius Enam Hadzide, former deputy Sports Minister and current CEO of the National Youth Authority, failed in his bid to win a seat for the NPP in the Asuogyaman Constituency.

Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye
Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who had been speculated to return as Sports Minister in the next administration, did not contest the NDC primaries this year. As a result, Nii Ashie Kotey will now represent the constituency in Parliament following his victory in the 2024 elections.

These results reflect the shifting political landscape, with sports figures making significant impacts both in sports and in the political sphere.
