A boat carrying 17 people overturned on Lake Chamo in southern Ethiopia on Thursday, leaving 14 individuals unaccounted for.

Local authorities successfully rescued two survivors from the water.

The vessel, which was transporting bananas, sank in the lake situated south of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Among the missing are 15 workers involved in unloading the bananas and the boat’s operator.

Local officials report that search and rescue operations are currently in progress.

Lake Chamo, notorious for its crocodiles and hippopotamuses, is part of the Great Rift Valley and reaches a maximum depth of 14 meters.
