The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament asserts its status as the new majority following Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four seats as vacant.

In light of a Supreme Court ruling on October 18 that temporarily halted Bagbin’s decision, the NDC maintains its claim to the majority.

During a press conference on October 20, party leader Cassiel Ato Forson encouraged Ghanaians to “stand by the Speaker and resist oppressor’s rule,” emphasizing their ongoing commitment to fighting for the people’s rights.

The caucus declared it would only recognize the Speaker regarding the legality of the situation.

Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga expressed skepticism about the legal grounds for suspending parliamentary decisions, asserting that they act based on formal communications rather than media reports.

Speaker Alban Bagbin had previously declared four parliamentary seats vacant after their occupants opted to run as Independent Candidates in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin subsequently filed an ex-parte motion seeking a stay of execution on Bagbin’s ruling, which the Supreme Court granted within 24 hours, allowing the four MPs to retain their seats.
